Dog Cooling Bed

Cool, relaxed, ultimate comfort. Lying in a hammock, the very slightest movement in the air seems to turn into a slight breeze encircling the entire body, cooling it. The mesh material of the hammock conforms to the body, creating cool light support. Wow! Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? Some ingenious designers evidently thought man’s best friend, the dog, deserved the same cooling supportive comfort. Cooling beds are raised dogs beds. The bed itself is supported on a frame with legs, thus giving the hammock effect. Veterinarians have come to the conclusion that the way the raised bed conforms to the dog’s body actually supports the dogs spine.

These beds have the standard optional choices as most dog beds. Color, frame material, size, and of course price range; all are to be considered. Dog cooling beds have two very distinct ‘mattresses’ to choose from.

Perhaps the most common style resembles the hammock mentioned earlier. A special knitted mesh fabric is connected to the bed frame giving the air circulating hammock effect.

The second type has a mattress or cushion which attaches to the raised bed frame. This special cushion is actually filled with a cooling substance. The substances used to fill this type bed varies greatly, from a mostly water based mixture to specially designed gels. Cushions that are mostly water based should be kept in cool shady areas to work properly. The water based cushion actually absorbs the dog’s body heat, thus cooling the dog. The gel based cushion is beneficial to arthritic dogs. It uses the same cooling principal as the water based bed. The gel actually conforms to the dog’s body giving it support and relieving pressure points at the same time it cools the dog.

Maintenance of these beds is extremely simple. To clean the mesh type bed, simply wash it with a garden hose. The filled cushion type cleans easily by wiping the cushion with a damp cloth.

The main thing to remember when using a dog cooling bed is to keep it in a cool shady place and always out of direct sunlight.

People who love country warmth and charm in their decorating scheme should consider a wicker bed for their dog. They are hand-woven, so special care must be taken when selecting this product for a dog.

Tightness of weave may vary greatly. One style may be so tightly woven as to be almost solid, while another style may be very loosely woven, with open gaps in the looser woven style. Whichever style is used, it should be done correctly with no protruding ends to hurt the dog. The products weave should be continuous, with the ends woven down into the weave line.

Size of the bed is determined of course by the size of the dog it is meant for. The inside of the bed should be one size larger than the dog. To clarify that statement—the dog should be able to turn a complete circle comfortably in his bed before he lies down. By giving him that much extra space, his comfort is guaranteed.

Inside the bed is a comfortable pillow for the dog to lie on. The most popular pillows are filled with a poly-fil x cedar mixture. Cedar is added to the poly-fil because it deodorizes the dog bed and also repels fleas and other insects. Fabric color and material options vary from very economical to very expensive.

In today’s recession, cost is always an important factor in any purchase. Wicker dog beds are very reasonably priced. Simple styles for extra small and small dogs often are priced below $20.00. Large simple styles may often be found under $100.00.

Why a raised dog bed? There is not just one correct answer to this question, but several correct answers. It seems the raised dog bed has many different benefits over the now outdated flat on the floor dog bed.

Veterinarians are beginning to recommend the raised beds over floor model beds. Why? Because these beds give dogs the spinal support we look for in our own beds. The spinal support benefit is the number one reason for purchasing these beds.

Raised dog beds come in several styles and have a large number of options available to the buyer. The first choice to be made is if the bed to be purchased is an indoor bed or an outdoor bed.

The indoor bed comes in several fabric options. Two of the most popular fabrics are fleece or a plush shearling type fabric. These fabrics can be lined with a waterproof backing if the dog tends to soils its bed. Indoor beds keep the dog off the floor and away from winters drafts of cold air sweeping across the floor. Also preventing chilling drafts are the optional sidewalls present on all four sides. Dogs can snuggle up against these sidewalls for added warmth and comfort. Most beds made for indoor use are machine washable and dryable.

What could be easier to clean than the indoor bed cover? Possibly the outdoor bed. Being made of a specially designed mesh fabric, all that is required to clean them is hose them off and let them dry. They are also machine washable and dryable if preferred. The mesh of the fabric of the outdoor style actually “breathes” and allows cooling air circulation throughout the bed.

After deciding if an indoor or outdoor bed is best, common options include, size, color, and side panels. More costly options such as monogramming are available. The monogramming option is having the dogs name embroidered onto the beds cover.

The frame material ranges from pvc pipe to stainless steel. Frame construction is an important component. The frame should be durable, free from any sharp points, and easy to assemble (preferrably no tools required). The price begins at below $30.00 and can extend well over $100.00 depending on the construction materials, size, and extra options.

If replacing a current dog bed, raised dog beds should certainly be considered. Besides the added comfort given the dog, is the additional benefit of spinal support to keep the dog in good health.
